Culloden Estate & Spa, Belfast is a family run (since 1962) five-star resort located just outside the city overlooking Belfast Lough. Surrounded by protected woodland, 105 opulent guest rooms and executive suites afford stunning views of the churning waters of Belfast Lough, Belfast's gateway to the Irish Sea.
The Culloden is the "go-to" hotel for dignitaries and celebrities, with anyone from Tony Blair to Tom Jones staying in the luxurious Palace Suite. Ladies come go there for afternoon tea, wedding parties arrive for photos in the grounds, and couples in cashmere sweaters descend for spa and golf weekends. Popular is the delicious 'Pink Afternoon Tea' where you can lunch, while doing you bit for charity. The tea costs £25 per person with £5 donated to the Ulster Cancer Foundation.
Culloden is a former bishop's palace that retains an earthy Irish charm with a striking castle-like residence five miles out of Belfast. A grand staircase and stunning 19th-century stained glass window greet guests on arrival. The rooms have tall sash windows, huge plump beds and generous sized bathrooms with the fluffiest of bath robes and towels.
The rooms are indeed luxurious; however, The Culloden's selling point is its 15,000-square-foot Spa at Culloden, which offers a range of treatments using ESPA products, locally inspired signature treatments and aromatherapy massage rooms. Recently extended, there are eight treatment rooms and two relaxation areas located by the well equipped fitness suite, marble steam room and a deck pool. The Thai Massage is just one of the signature treatments available. This 'clothes on' treatment starts by gently stretching the body, acupressure is then applied to ease away tension and vastly increase circulation and flexibility.
The Indian Head massage is also very popular, as it helps reduce tension and increase circulation leaving you with a feeling of complete well-being. The massage begins with a calming yet energising scalp massage focusing on the vital energy points, combined with individually chosen aromatherapy oils. Those who prefer to take fitness in the open air can take advantage of the famed Royal Belfast Golf Club, which is conveniently situated opposite of The Culloden.
The AA Rosette award-winning Mitre Restaurant has an air of gothic charm and delivers superior gourmet dishes with 5-star service. Less formal dining can be had at the Cultra Inn, a traditional Irish pub, set in the hotel gardens its beautiful views offer the perfect spot for a nightcap.
