Museums are no longer stuffy establishments. Boring school trips and mind-numbing displays of useless information are a distant memory. They are now gleaming beacons of cool, packed with stylish exhibitions and bags of inspiration. Flick through any glossy magazine, and you'll see they're also the perfect backdrop to the capital's coolest parties. Rupa Sudra hits the museum trail to explore this autumn's must-see fashion exhibitions.
The House of Viktor & Rolf – Barbican Art Gallery
Over the past 15 years, Swedish design duo Viktor & Rolf have taken the fashion world by storm with their particular blend of cool irony and surreal beauty, and in this, their first British exhibition, the wackiness is no holds barred. The Barbican's art space has been transformed into an oversized doll's house, complete with an army of 55 dolls, dressed in painstakingly detailed remakes of the duo's greatest pieces. The attention to detail is mind-boggling. The dolls have human hair, and where possible, the same fabrics have been sourced to match the originals. And after the mini-me's, venture into the surrounding rooms, where 6 ft doubles of the dolls stand with catwalk footage playing in the background. There's an eerie, underworld ambience accompanying this exhibition. This is fashion with a surreal and sinister twist… you have been warned!

Fashion in the palm of your hand – The Fan Museum
Just like today's 'it' bags, the fan was once a fashion staple. This fascinating exhibition flits through history showing how the fan was used as a symbol of wealth and power, and to flirt, right up to the present day, where burlesque model Dita Von Teese, has reinvigorated its erotic association. Definitely worth a flap!
