Dating back to the mid-nineteenth Century, Nutfield Priory in Surrey is an idyllic country mansion set high on Nutfield ridge, with absolutely breathtaking views of the Sussex and Surrey countryside.
The imposing country house is just perfect for a cosy weekend away this winter. With its original stone framed arched windows and stunning wood panelled walls, the new owners have made more than a nod to the long history of the property, having really restored it to its former glory. With original marble fireplaces having been carefully maintained, a roaring fire on a cold afternoon in Nutfield’s grand hall is the ultimate in winter relaxation.
The hotel is ideal for both those wanting to shut themselves off from the outside world and for those who fancy a more energetic break. With a spa offering everything from the latest in luxury body treatments to a large pool, Jacuzzi and gym, even a day trip to the hotel is worth while for a quick wind down.
But whether you just visit or make a proper break of it, be sure to end your day in the stunning Cloisters restaurant. With its impressive arched ceiling and elaborate stone-carved windows overlooking the hotel grounds, the fantastic French-English cuisine is served by the kind of friendly staff rarely found today.
And for those who do stay, the grand bedrooms decorated in a sympathetic but modern style, with large plasma TVs and friendly staff ready to cater to your every whim, makes breakfast in bed a great way to start the day on those chilly winter mornings when you just can’t face getting up.
If you are interested in exploring the area, the hotel is also ideally located for many of the region’s top tourist attractions, including Hampton Court Palace, just 20 miles away and the family home of Sir Winston Churchill. The nearby Denby’s wine estate runs wine tours every hour and for horse racing fans Epsom Downs is just a short drive away, not to mention numerous other historical houses, wildlife parks and theme parks.
And for on-site exploring, the estate itself provides many opportunities for long winter walks. Finishing any day trip with one of Nutfield’s famous afternoon English teas in the Library is an absolute must.
Nutfield, now one of the luxurious Handpicked Hotels, was a private residence until the 1930’s. It has in fact never actually been a Priory but gets its name from the “medieval monks” who used to apparently walk along the Cloisters and angle in the lake on Thursdays. The new owners have really restored the Priory’s former beauty and a weekend there is a real taster of what it might have been like to be a member of the gentry 150 years ago – albeit with central heating to ensure the winter chills only get to you when you step outside!
