Don’t miss the Women’s Arts International Festival
Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith, Germaine Greer, Jo Brand, Michele Hanson, Ali Smith… All these women and more are performing at the Women’s Arts International Festival (WAIF) in Cumbria this month.
Held over 20 days, the first-ever WAIF has a hit line-up making it stand out amongst the best summer festivals this year.
WAIF is helping achieve two goals, according to festival organiser Linda Graham. First, it is a chance to explore whether there are certain themes and concerns that unite women’s art. Second, it brings women artists more exposure and a leg-up into the mainstream.
And, if you’re looking for a protest or stand up, you’re out of luck. Graham says there are no politics on the agenda. Speaking to the Guardian, Linda said: “We thought that this was the first time that we could produce a festival like this, a multi art form festival, that didn’t have an overtly political agenda, where we weren’t there to beat the drum and make a stand.”
Together with entertaining, WAIF is also about educating. There are a series of workshops and masterclasses being held throughout the 20 days covering film, dance, music and literature.
Women’s Arts International Festival at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal, Cumbria, takes place from 4-24 May. Tickets can be purchased at the box office on 01539 725133 between 10am and 8,30pm Monday to Friday. For more information, check out www.womensartsinternational.co.uk
