David Cameron; maintaining the work/life balance
David Cameron; maintaining the work/life balance

By Barbara Walshe

It's impossible to miss David Cameron these days.  Just as Gordon Brown has moved into power, so too has Cameron upped his profile on the nation's radar.

The result?  Whether he's talking in parliament, newspapers, on TV, radio or over the internet, it is near impossible not to be the tiniest bit curious about him - even if you're not into politics.

He is, after all, the Labour party's main Conservative opposition in the last ten years - and is working hard to modernise the image and views of the Tory party.  Throughout the UK, hundreds of people are asking that same question: 'Will he or won't he be the next PM?'

"If you care about your work-life balance, and you should, then you can deliver on it. Even if it's a high job in politics"

Speaking to Coutts Woman at a recent Coutts event, he assures us he should be. "It's an enormous challenge and I don't know when the election will be, I hope it will be sooner rather than later.  But I think the team I lead has got the ideas and the dynamism to take the country forward."

Cameron certainly has that dynamism in spades.  He speaks with passion and conviction around issues including disability, women, flexible working, family and poverty.  He is articulate and skilled in delivery - picked up, no doubt, during his seven years as Director of Corporate Affairs at Carlton Communication.

But, to most people, it is his image as a family man that endures. He speaks about women and flexible working, and his wife Samantha works as the creative director of Smythson of Bond Street. He argues about disability, and one of his three children was born with Cerebral Palsy.  He's keen about going green, and cycles to work (albeit with a car in tow).

Family life - his and Britain's - appear to be top of the agenda.  In the past, he's admitted: "If it comes to a collision between our wealth as a nation and the wellbeing of families - I choose families."

But what will happen to his current work and family life if he does become PM?  "Well, that balance has shifted quite a bit already," he says. "But I think if you run a good team rather than trying to do everything yourself, and keep good control of your diary, you can have a work-life balance."

Tonight, he says, he's going home.  "I'm actually going to have dinner with my wife."  One suspects this might not happen too often.  "It is possible.  If you care about your work-life balance, and you should, then you can deliver on it.  Even if it's a high job in politics," he insists.

"In fact, you must be able to," he stresses.  "You know, if you suddenly become exhausted and lose control of your life, you won't be a very good Prime Minister, let alone father."

It's hard not to draw parallels between Cameron and the young, enthusiastic, dark-haired Tony Blair who first went into office ten years ago.  Only time will tell if he does win the position and exits it as a tired, silver-haired version of himself in the future.
